Where to Get the Instructor Essentials Course

The BLS Instructor Essentials is a required online course available through the AHA at onlineaha.org. Complete it before attending this course and bring your printed certificate of completion.

Steps to Becoming an AHA BLS Instructor

Complete the BLS Instructor Essentials Online
Purchase and complete the AHA BLS Instructor Essentials course at onlineaha.org. This required online course covers the cognitive foundation of AHA instruction. Print your Certificate of Completion — you must bring it to class.

Have a Current AHA BLS Provider Card
You must hold an active, unexpired AHA BLS Provider certification before attending the instructor course. If yours is expired or you don't have one, you'll need to get certified first. Heart to Heart CTC offers two options: a full BLS class(4 hours, everything in one session) or a HeartCode BLS blended skills check(complete Part 1 online, then attend a ~1-hour in-office skills session). Attend the BLS Instructor Course (~8 Hours)
Complete the in-person instructor course at Heart to Heart CTC in Williamsburg. You'll demonstrate your BLS skills, pass a written test (84% or greater), and learn to teach and manage AHA courses. Bring both your BLS Instructor Manual and BLS Provider Manual.

Teach One Monitored BLS Provider Class
Before teaching on your own, you must co-instruct one BLS Provider class under the supervision of a Faculty BLS Instructor at Heart to Heart CTC. This monitoring must be completed within 6 months of your instructor course completion date.

What are the requirements to enroll?

What happens after I complete the instructor course?
You must co-teach one BLS Provider course under the supervision of a Faculty BLS Instructor at Heart to Heart CTC within 6 months of your completion date. After that, you can teach independently. AHA Instructor Network registration is completed in class with your instructor.
Where do I get the BLS Instructor Essentials course?
The BLS Instructor Essentials is available online through the American Heart Association at onlineaha.org. It is a required online course that must be completed before attending the in-person instructor class. Bring your printed Certificate of Completion to class.
