PCA vs. CNA: Which Career Is Right for You?

Arleigh Hatcher, BSN, RN • June 8, 2026

Side-by-Side Comparison

If you're thinking about starting a career in healthcare, two of the most common entry points are becoming a Personal Care Aide (PCA) or a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Both are rewarding paths that let you make a real difference in people's lives — but they're not the same job, and one may be a better fit for where you are right now.

Here's what you need to know to choose the right path.

What Does a PCA Do?

A Personal Care Aide helps clients with the activities of daily living — things like bathing, dressing, grooming, meal preparation, and light housekeeping. PCAs often work in clients' homes, assisted living facilities, or group homes, providing companionship and personal support.

The focus is on quality of life. You're helping someone maintain their independence and dignity, often building a close, ongoing relationship with the people you care for.

Training time: PCA programs are typically shorter — often completed in a matter of weeks. At HTH, our PCA Online Course is 40 hours and can be completed on your schedule.

Certification: Virginia does not require state licensure for PCAs, though employers often prefer — or require — formal training.

Where you'll work: Private homes, adult day programs, assisted living communities, group homes.

What Does a CNA Do?

A Certified Nursing Assistant performs many of the same personal care tasks as a PCA, but with a broader clinical scope. CNAs take vital signs, assist with medical equipment, document patient care, and work directly alongside nurses and physicians. They're an essential part of the clinical team.

Training time: CNA programs are more intensive — typically 75 to 120 hours of combined classroom and clinical training — followed by a state certification exam.

Certification: CNAs must pass Virginia's state competency exam to practice. Once certified, your credential is recognized statewide.

Where you'll work: Hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, rehabilitation centers, long-term care.

Which One Is Right for You?

Choose PCA if:

  • You want to start working quickly
  • You prefer one-on-one, relationship-based care
  • You're interested in home care or community settings
  • You want a stepping stone before pursuing your CNA

Choose CNA if:

  • You want a broader clinical skill set
  • You're aiming for a hospital or nursing facility career
  • You're planning to eventually become an LPN or RN
  • You want a state-recognized credential that opens more doors

You Don't Have to Choose Forever

Many healthcare workers start as PCAs to get experience and income, then complete their CNA certification when they're ready. The skills carry over, and the experience makes you a stronger CNA candidate.

Either way, you're starting a career that matters.
